Tracy Commock, Director of Natural History Museum of Jamaica – Botanist
Tracy Commock is a botanist by training having completed a Bachelor’s degree in Botany at the University of the West Indies (Mona) and an M.Phil. in Botanical Diversity from the Universities of Reading and Birmingham in the UK. While in the UK she had the opportunity to utilize the facilities and research the collections in herbaria at the Natural History Museum in London and the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew.
An Executive Member of the Natural History Society of Jamaica and a recipient of the Millennium Scholarship for Environmental Studies from the Environmental Foundation Of Jamaica, Mrs. Tracy Commock continues to encourage the preservation of biological diversity, especially plants, and to promote the nations need for capacity building in the field of taxonomy.
Tracy has attended and represented Jamaica at several science related conferences and visited several countries including Brazil, St. Lucia, Thailand, Lebanon and Spain.
As Director of the NHD, Mrs. Tracy Commock is responsible for ensuring the efficient management of the national collections of plants and animals and researching, documenting and disseminating information on biodiversity. She has also been employed as a botanist IOJ and plans to pursue further studies on the genus Phyllanthus in the Euphorbiaceae.
